AngrA+ is the result of the restoration of the main house (a centuries-old, unique building, classified and protected for its architectural and cultural interest), a new building (on the first floor, overlooking the edge of the plot of land facing the ocean) and an outdoor, landscaped space, in unobstructed relation to the sea, which is the consolidating element of the whole complex.
Architecture Project: SCC Arquitectos; Landscape Architecture Project: Baldios Arquitetos Paisagísticos; Execution: Construções Matos.
It includes a 900m2 outdoor space with a unique and breathtaking 180-degree panoramic view that stretches from the Bay of Fanal in the west, through Monte Brasil to the Ilhéu das Cabras in the east. It overlooks the rooftops and churches of Angra do Heroísmo, with the Atlantic as its horizon. The architectural firms involved proposed the rehabilitation of the existing building with the functional articulation of a new one, with modern lines but integrated into the landscape.
Considering its unique location overlooking the city of Angra do Heroísmo, care was taken to minimize the visual impact. The project had to be adjusted several times in order to preserve and integrate the various secular findings that emerged during the renovation, such as stone oratories and arches (16th century) , stone arches (17th century) , original windows and several dressed stones. The promoters’ love of preservation prolonged the time it took to complete the work, but in the end resulted in a contemporary space steeped in history.
The landscape restoration of the surrounding land favored the conservation of existing flora, which is predominantly native, the reconstruction of traditional stone walls, and the use of regional materials such as basalt, bagacina and cryptomeria. The garden and the outdoor pool overlooking the landscape take care of the rest!
